FAQ

TESTING ON THE INBODY

How long does it take to perform a test?

The InBody Test lasts between 15 and 120 seconds, depending on the model being used.

Why do I need to remove my shoes and socks for the test?

Because the bottom of your feet must be in direct contact with the electrodes, clothing items such as shoes, socks, stockings, or leggings must be removed for accurate results.

Can I operate an InBody device without any special training?

Yes. InBody devices are quick, convenient, and easy to use. Each InBody model has an intuitive LCD screen for data entry and prints a result sheet automatically after each test. Each InBody comes standard with a quick set-up and installation guide, a user’s manual, a results interpretation poster, and a results interpretation booklet. If you have any questions regarding the InBody, please contact an InBody specialist or Customer Service representative here.

What are important guidelines users should or should not do before a test?

Before a test, you should:

  • Use the bathroom
  • Maintain the same testing conditions as your first test
  • Use an InBody tissue to wipe down electrodes
  • Avoid eating or wait two hours after a meal

Avoid testing if before the test, you:

  • Exercised strenuously
  • Used a sauna, steam room, or bath
  • Consumed diuretics such as caffeine, alcohol, and medication
  • Have a fever, cold, or chill
Will I feel the electrical currents during the test?

For the average population, the electrical currents sent through the body during an InBody tests are too low to feel. However, there is a small possibility that individuals with tactile sensitivity may feel a slight sensation.

What factors can affect the accuracy of my test results?

For the average population, the electrical currents sent through the body during an InBody tests are too low to feel. However, there is a small possibility that individuals with tactile sensitivity may feel a slight sensation.

Can the InBody test people with prosthetic limbs?

Unfortunately, the InBody’s electrical currents are unable to flow through prosthetic limbs. The electrodes must come into contact with the body at all eight contact points: thumbs, palms, soles, and heels.

Who are not recommended to take an InBody test?
  • People with artificial electrical implants such as a defibrillator or pacemaker should not be tested. The electrical currents of the InBody may disrupt the functionality of life-sustaining implants.
  • Women who are on their menstrual cycle may not obtain accurate results due to subtle changes in their hydration and body water levels.
  • Pregnant women are not recommended to take the test because of the body’s constant fluctuations during pregnancy.
Why use an InBody Tissue before testing?

The InBody Tissue increases electrical conductivity where the hand and feet electrodes make contact with the skin. Without the tissues, it could be difficult for the electrical currents to flow through thick calluses or hard skin on the hands or bottom of the feet. The InBody Tissue also serves as an antibacterial wipe, which helps with the sanitation.

What does the standard InBody package include?

Each InBody purchase comes with the InBody Body Composition Analyzer, a box of 500 results sheets, a box of 300 InBody tissues, a compatible printer, a USB cable, a user’s manual, a results interpretation poster, a results interpretation booklet, and a quick set-up and installation guide.

Does the InBody do wireless printing?

Currently, the InBody units do not have wireless printing capabilities. The InBody 270, 570, and 770 connect to Lookin'Body Web, a cloud database management software that allows you to look at your result sheets on the computer and email them to clients in PDF format. INBODY TECHNOLOGY

How do InBody devices compare to other BIA devices? What are the major technical differences between the InBody and other BIA devices?
  • The use of multiple frequencies to accurately measure intracellular and extracellular water
  • 8-point tactile electrode system with patented thumb electrodes providing a direct and reproducible measurement
  • Segmental impedance measurements to include accurate lean body mass measurements of the trunk
  • No empirical estimations required. No population-based statistical data is used in calculating results.
What are the advantages of using multiple frequencies instead of a single frequency?

Using multiple frequencies improves accuracy and precision. At a single, low frequency, it is difficult for electrical currents to penetrate the cellular membrane and assess intracellular water. As frequencies get higher, the electrical current is more capable of penetrating the cellular membrane and accurately measuring intracellular water.

What printers are compatible with InBody devices?

Almost all printers using PCL3 or above are compatible with InBody devices. However, InBody units are sold with a standard configuration that includes a compatible printer. Download the list of compatible printers in our download center here.

How do InBody devices work?

InBody devices use direct segmental measurement bioelectrical impedance analysis (DSM-BIA), a patented technology, to precisely measure body composition by sending multiple electrical currents through the body, resulting in up to six different impedance readings for the trunk and each of the four limbs.

The innovative in-depth analysis of the InBody Test yields accurate results for body composition outputs, such as body fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, (segmental) lean body mass, and percent body fat.

GENERAL BODY COMPOSITION

Is BIA technology accurate?

Historically, BIA technology, devices, and results have been met with some degree of skepticism. However, InBody technology addresses these concerns with its technological features and provides great precision and accuracy for total body and regional measurements.

How often can you measure body composition?

The frequency of measurement is fully dependent on each facility and program. InBody recommends testing every 2-4 weeks.

When measuring body composition on BIA devices, why do results change when height changes?

The volume of a cylinder, in this case the body, changes when the height of the cylinder changes. BIA devices consider the body as a cylinder and the volume of body water is calculated with the height and impedance of the body.

How can percent body fat change within a time frame as short as one day?

Weight and body water changes can occur with the introduction of meals and fluids, or with a change in environment. Circulation of body water may also cause changes in water distribution throughout the day. It is recommended that repeat tests be performed under the same testing conditions, in the same environment, and at the same time of day as the initial test.

What are the differences between InBody models?

All InBody models accurately measure weight and body composition. Other outputs and technical specifications differ by model. These differences are highlighted on the main product page.

Can anyone purchase an InBody device?

Yes. The InBody 270, 370, 570 and 770 are non-prescriptive, over-the-counter medical-grade devices and can be purchased by any individual or organization.

What are some ways I can use the InBody?

Because the InBody is extremely versatile in terms of usage, it can be used for:

  • Obesity treatments and prevention programs
  • Weight loss and weight management programs
  • Rehabilitation
  • Monitoring muscle development in aging adults
  • Health fairs and medical prevention events
  • Peak performance
